RESUMO

Procedures such as transport and marketing can subject animals to water and feed deprivation and impair animal health and performance. Maintaining the mineral status of animals under these conditions can bring benefits to health and performance. The use of hydroxychloride mineral sources can improve mineral status, nutrient digestibility and performance. Two studies were conducted to investigate how the supplementation of 02 trace mineral sources of Cu and Zn and 48-hour water/feed deprivation would affect the performance and metabolism of grass-fed beef cattle. In the first study, 20 castrated and rumen-canulated Nellore steers (BW = 350 ±â€¯132 kg; 20 m) were distributed in individual pens, in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement: supplemental Cu and Zn sources from inorganic vs hydroxychloride (HTM) and 48-hours deprivation (WFD) vs unrestricted (WFU) access to water and feed. The 57d of study was divided into two periods: (1) Adaptation from -21d to -1d and (2) evaluation from 0d to 36d. Interaction between deprivation × period was detected (P < 0.05) for digestibility of DM (DMD), organic matter (OMD), neutral detergent fiber (NDFD), and acid detergent fiber (ADFD). Deprivation increased DMD, OMD, NDFD, and ADFD immediately after the deprivation period (3-5d), but impaired digestibility at longer periods such as 11-13d and 32-34d. DM (DMI) and nutrient intake (P = 0.075), as well as NDFD were higher in HTM. Several ruminal parameters were affected by deprivation: short-chain fatty acids concentration decreased, while rumen pH increased (deprivation × time; P < 0.05); decreased propionate, butyrate and increased isobutyrate, isovalerate, and valerate in WFD (deprivation × time; P < 0.05), respectively. In the second study, eighty-four intact Nellore males (BW = 260 ±â€¯35 kg) were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu paddocks for 131d in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Liver Cu was higher in WFU/HTM animals (mineral × deprivation; P < 0.05). Interaction between deprivation × period (P < 0.05) was detected for BW and average daily gain (ADG). On 2d and 12d after deprivation, WFD increased ADG and recovered the BW lost. In conclusion, water and feed deprivation imposed in these trials were able to impact several nutrient digestibility and ruminal fermentation parameters in short- and long-term. Performance was not affected by the studied factors. Furthermore, supplementation with sources of Cu and Zn hydroxychloride increased Cu in the liver and tended to increase DMI and NDFD.

RESUMO

This article aims to describe the multidisciplinary clinical management of an intrusive luxation case. The clinical case reports the management of crown fracture and intrusive luxation of permanent maxillary incisors. The clinical results and subjective outcomes four years after the trauma and after two years of post-treatment follow-up are presented. An 11-year-old female patient sought dental care at the local University after experiencing dental trauma. Crown fracture of tooth 8 and the intrusion and crown fracture of teeth 9 and 10 were clinically diagnosed. The multidisciplinary treatment performed involved: periodontal surgical procedures; orthodontic traction; endodontic treatment; dental bleaching; and esthetic resin composite restorations. After two years of follow-up, the clinical parameters of the restorations were satisfactory, as well as the periodontal and periapical status. Oral health-related quality of life was assessed before and after treatment using the OHIP-Aes instrument, with a significant improvement in quality of life after treatment. The multidisciplinary approach was an effective treatment for this case of intrusive luxation. The dentofacial function and esthetics were recovered and the patient's quality of life was improved.

RESUMO

Abstract We tested the hypothesis of a negative relationship between vegetation characteristics and ant species richness in a Brazilian open vegetation habitat, called candeial. We set up arboreal pitfalls to sample arboreal ants and measured the following environmental variables, which were used as surrogate of environmental heterogeneity: tree richness, tree density, tree height, circumference at the base of the plants, and canopy cover. Only canopy cover had a negative effect on the arboreal ant species richness. Vegetation characteristics and plant species composition are probably homogeneous in candeial, which explains the lack of relationship between other environmental variables and ant richness. Open vegetation habitats harbor a large number of opportunistic and generalist species, besides specialist ants from habitats with high temperatures. An increase in canopy cover decreases sunlight incidence and may cause local microclimatic differences, which negatively affect the species richness of specialist ants from open areas. Canopy cover regulates the richness of arboreal ants in open areas, since only few ant species are able to colonize sites with dense vegetation; most species are present in sites with high temperature and luminosity. Within open vegetation habitats the relationship between vegetation characteristics and species richness seems to be the opposite from closed vegetation areas, like forests.

This study investigated the effect of the dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonist, amlodipine, on blood pressure (BP) during resistance exercise performed at different intensities in hypertensives. Eleven hypertensives underwent 4 weeks of placebo and amlodipine (random double-blinded crossover design). In each phase, they performed knee extension exercise until exhaustion following three protocols: one set at 100% of 1 RM (repetition maximum), three sets at 80% of 1 RM, and three sets at 40% of 1 RM. Intraarterial BP was measured before and during exercise. Amlodipine reduced maximal systolic/diastolic BP values achieved at all intensities (100% = 225 ± 6/141 ± 3 vs. 207 ± 6/130 ± 6 mmHg; 80% = 289 ± 8/178 ± 5 vs. 273 ± 10/169 ± 6 mmHg; 40% = 289 ± 10/176 ± 8 vs. 271 ± 11/154 ± 6 mmHg). Amlodipine blunted the increase in diastolic BP that occurred during the second and third sets of exercise at 40% of 1RM (+75 ± 6 vs. +61 ± 5 mmHg and +78 ± 7 vs. +64 ± 5 mmHg, respectively). Amlodipine was effective in reducing the absolute values of systolic and diastolic BP during resistance exercise and in preventing the progressive increase in diastolic BP that occurs over sets of low-intensity exercise. These results suggest that systemic vascular resistance is involved in BP increase during resistance exercise, and imply that hypertensives receiving amlodipine are at lower risk of increased BP during resistance exercise than non-medicated patients.

RESUMO

To compare post-resistance exercise hypotension (PREH) and its mechanisms in normotensive and hypertensive individuals, 14 normotensives and 12 hypertensives underwent two experimental sessions: control (rest) and exercise (seven exercises, three sets, 50% of one repetition maximum). Hemodynamic and autonomic clinic measurements were taken before (Pre) and at two moments post-interventions (Post 1: between 30 and 60 min; Post 2: after 7 h). Ambulatory blood pressure (BP) was monitored for 24 h. At Post 1, exercise decreased systolic BP similarly in normotensives and hypertensives (-8 ± 2 vs -13 ± 2 mmHg, P > 0.05), whereas diastolic BP decreased more in hypertensives (-4 ± 1 vs -9 ± 1 mmHg, P < 0.05). Cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance did not change in normotensives and hypertensives (0.0 ± 0.3 vs 0.0 ± 0.3 L/min; -1 ± 1 vs -2 ± 2 U, P > 0.05). After exercise, heart rate (+13 ± 3 vs +13 ± 2 bpm) and its variability (low- to high-frequency components ratio, 1.9 ± 0.4 vs +1.4 ± 0.3) increased whereas stroke volume (-14 ± 5 vs -11 ± 5 mL) decreased similarly in normotensives and hypertensives (all, P > 0.05). At Post 2, all variables returned to pre-intervention, and ambulatory data were similar between sessions. Thus, a session of resistance exercise promoted PREH in normotensives and hypertensives. Although this PREH was greater in hypertensives, it did not last during the ambulatory period, which limits its clinical relevance. In addition, the mechanisms of PREH were similar in hypertensives and normotensives.

RESUMO

Due to differences in study populations and protocols, the hemodynamic determinants of post-aerobic exercise hypotension (PAEH) are controversial. This review analyzed the factors that might influence PAEH hemodynamic determinants, through a search on PubMed using the following key words: "postexercise" or "post-exercise" combined with "hypotension", "blood pressure", "cardiac output", and "peripheral vascular resistance", and "aerobic exercise" combined only with "blood pressure". Forty-seven studies were selected, and the following characteristics were analyzed: age, gender, training status, body mass index status, blood pressure status, exercise intensity, duration and mode (continuous or interval), time of day, and recovery position. Data analysis showed that 1) most postexercise hypotension cases are due to a reduction in systemic vascular resistance; 2) age, body mass index, and blood pressure status influence postexercise hemodynamics, favoring cardiac output decrease in elderly, overweight, and hypertensive subjects; 3) gender and training status do not have an isolated influence; 4) exercise duration, intensity, and mode also do not affect postexercise hemodynamics; 5) time of day might have an influence, but more data are needed; and 6) recovery in the supine position facilitates systemic vascular resistance decrease. In conclusion, many factors may influence postexercise hypotension hemodynamics, and future studies should directly address these specific influences because different combinations may explain the observed variability in postexercise hemodynamic studies.

RESUMO

The accuracy of two different methods in measuring the ammonia nitrogen (N-NH3) concentration in rumen fluid were evaluated: a catalyzed indophenol colorimetric reaction (CICR) and the Kjeldahl distillation (KD). Five buffered standard solutions containing volatile fatty acids, true protein, and known ammonia concentrations (0, 3, 6, 12, and 24 N-NH3 mg/dL) were used to simulate rumen fluid. Different ratios (10:1, 7.5:1, 5:1, 2.5:1, 1:1, 1:2.5, 1:5, 1:7.5, and 1:10) of a potassium hydroxide solution (KOH, 2 mol/L) to standard solutions were evaluated by the KD method. The accuracy of each method was evaluated by adjusting a simple linear regression model of the estimated N-NH3 concentrations on the N-NH3 concentrations in the standard solutions. When the KD method was used, N-NH3 was observed to be released from the deamination of true protein (P<0.05), and an incomplete recovery of N-NH3 was observed (P<0.05), except for 7.5:1 and 5:1 ratios of KOH solution to standard solutions (P>0.05). The estimates of the N-NH3 concentration obtained by the CICR method were found to be accurate (P>0.05). After the accuracy evaluation, ninety-three samples of rumen fluid were evaluated by the CICR and KD methods (using the 5:1 ratio of KOH solution to rumen fluid sample), assuming that the CICR estimates would be accurate. The N-NH3 concentrations obtained by the two methods were observed to be different (P<0.05) but strongly correlated (r = 0.9701). Thus, it was concluded that the estimates obtained by the Kjeldahl distillation using a 5:1 ratio of KOH solution to rumen fluid sample can be adjusted to avoid biases. Furthermore, a model to adjust the N-NH3 concentration is suggested.

The objective of this work was to evaluate combinations between acid digestion techniques and spectrophotometric quantification to measure chromium concentration in cattle feces. Digestion techniques were evaluated based on the use of nitric and perchloric acids, sulfuric and perchloric acids, and phosphoric acid. The chromium quantification in the solutions was performed by colorimetry and by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). When AAS was used, the addition of calcium chloride to the solutions as a releasing agent was also evaluated. Several standard samples containing known chromium contents were produced (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10g of chromium per kg of feces) using cattle feces obtained from three different animals to evaluate the accuracy of the different combinations of techniques. The accuracy was evaluated by adjusting a simple linear regression model of the estimated values on the actual values of chromium content in the standard samples. Regardless of the digestion technique, the chromium content estimates in the standard samples obtained by colorimetry were not accurate (P<0.05). Considering the AAS quantification, the digestion techniques based on nitric and perchloric acids and based on sulfuric and perchloric acids provided complete chromium recovery (P>0.05). The use of the digestion technique in phosphoric acid provided incomplete recovery of the fecal chromium (P<0.05). Subsequently, the digestion techniques in nitric and perchloric acids and digestion in sulfuric and perchloric acids, both evaluated by AAS, were compared using 84 cattle feces samples. The results indicate that these techniques provide similar (P>0.05) fecal chromium contents.

A total of 1200 Lohmann LSL laying hens, with 64 weeks of age in conventional cages was used. These were divided into five groups according to the level of apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen retention (AMEn) present in the diet: 2700kcal/kg; 2775kcal/kg; 2850kcal/kg; 2925kcal/kg and 3000kcal/kg, with six replicates. The birds received the diets based on corn and soybean meal for 16 weeks. The experimental design was completely randomized and the means were submitted to polynomial regression and the Kruskal-Wallis test. The increased level of AMEn had no effect on production, egg mass and weight. There was no influence of AMEn on bird weight, egg weight and viability. Feed intake decreased with increasing levels, however, and the conversion of AMEn was worse with its increase, and in return feed conversion worsened with increasing consumption. AMEn is constant regardless of the level of the feed. There is no difference in Haugh units, yolk solids and percentage of egg components. The specific gravity improves with increasing levels of AMEn. The nutritional levels for older laying hens may be overestimated.

RESUMO

Post-resistance exercise hypotension has been extensively described in men and women. However, gender influence on this response has not yet been clear. Gender might change post-exercise hemodynamics, since men and women respond differently during exercise. Thus, the purpose was to compare post-resistance exercise hypotension and its hemodynamic determinants in men and women. Normotensive subjects (22-male, 22-female) underwent 2 sessions: control (40 min of rest) and exercise (6 resistance exercises, 3 sets, 20 repetitions, at 40-50% of 1RM). Blood pressure, heart rate, and cardiac output were measured prior to and following interventions. Blood pressure decrease after exercise was similar between the genders. However, hemodynamic determinants responded differently in men and women. Systemic vascular resistance reduced in women (-4.6±1.9U, P<0.05), while cardiac output decreased in men (-0.6±0.2 L/min, P<0.05). This response was accompanied by a decrease in stroke volume in men (-21.6±5.1 ml, P<0.05) and a more pronounced increase in heart rate in men than in women (+11.3±1.3 vs. +6.5±1.7 bpm, P<0.05, respectively). In conclusion, post-resistance exercise hypotension was similar in men and women. However, its hemodynamic determinants differ between the genders, depending on cardiac output decrease in men and on systemic vascular resistance decrease in women.

RESUMO

Fifty-nine Nellore bulls from low and high residual feed intake (RFI) levels were studied with the objective of evaluating meat quality traits. Animals were slaughtered when ultrasound-measured backfat thickness reached 4mm, and samples of Longissimus were collected. A mixed model including RFI as fixed effect and herd and diet as random effects was used, and least square means were compared by t-test. More efficient animals consumed 0.730 kg dry matter/day less than less efficient animals, with similar performance. No significant differences in carcass weight, prime meat cuts proportion, chemical composition, pH, sarcomere length, or color were observed between RFI groups. Shear force, myofibrillar fragmentation index and soluble collagen content were influenced by RFI, with a higher shear force and soluble collagen content and a lower fragmentation index in low RFI animals. Feedlot-finished low RFI young Nellore bulls more efficiently convert feed into meat, presenting carcasses within quality standards.

RESUMO

Moderate- to high-intensity strength training is recommended for healthy adults. In young subjects, a single session of strength training decreases blood pressure, while heart rate and cardiac work remain elevated afterwards. However, these effects have not been clearly demonstrated in elderly subjects. To investigate this issue, 16 elderly subjects each underwent a Control and an Exercise (3 sets, 8 RM, 9 exercises) session conducted in random order. Haemodynamic variables and heart rate variability were measured before and after the interventions. Systolic blood pressure did not change after the exercise session but did increase after the control session (+8.1±1.6 mm Hg, P≤0.05). Diastolic blood pressure, as well as systemic vascular resistance increased similarly after both sessions. Cardiac output and stroke volume decreased, while heart rate, rate-pressure product and the low- to high-frequency ratio of heart rate variability increased only after the exercise session ( - 0.5±0.1 L/min, - 9.3±2.0 ml,+3.8±1.6 bpm, +579.3±164.1 mmHg.bpm and +0.71±0.34, P≤0.05). Ambulatory blood pressure was similar after both sessions, while heart rate and rate pressure product remained higher after the exercise session for up to 4.5 h. After a single session of strength training, cardiac sympathetic modulation and heart rate remain elevated in elderly subjects, keeping cardiac work elevated for a long period of time.

RESUMO

Resistance training increases muscle strength in older adults, decreasing the effort necessary for executing physical tasks, and reducing cardiovascular load during exercise. This hypothesis has been confirmed during strength-based activities, but not during aerobic-based activities. This study determined whether different resistance training regimens, strength training (ST, constant movement velocity) or power training (PT, concentric phase performed as fast as possible) can blunt the increase in cardiovascular load during an aerobic stimulus. Older adults (63.9 ± 0.7 years) were randomly allocated to: control (N = 11), ST (N = 13, twice a week, 70-90 percent 1-RM) and PT (N = 15, twice a week, 30-50 percent 1-RM) groups. Before and after 16 weeks, oxygen uptake (VO2), systolic blood pressure (SBP), heart rate (HR), and rate pressure product (RPP) were measured during a maximal treadmill test. Resting SBP and RPP were similarly reduced in all groups (combined data = -5.7 ± 1.2 and -5.0 ± 1.7 percent, respectively, P < 0.05). Maximal SBP, HR and RPP did not change. The increase in measured VO2, HR and RPP for the increment in estimated VO2 (absolute load) decreased similarly in all groups (combined data = -9.1 ± 2.6, -14.1 ± 3.9, -14.2 ± 3.0 percent, respectively, P < 0.05), while the increments in the cardiovascular variables for the increase in measured VO2 did not change. In elderly subjects, ST and PT did not blunt submaximal or maximal HR, SBP and RPP increases during the maximal exercise test, showing that they did not reduce cardiovascular stress during aerobic tasks.

RESUMO

The neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents were evaluated in concentrates, forages, and cattle feces using filter bags under pressured or non-pressured physical environments. Twenty samples of each material were used. The contents obtained under different environments were compared by linear regression. The NDF and ADF estimates were found different between physical environments for all materials (P<0.01). The utilization of pressured environment is recommended to avoid gas accumulation in the bags, which may compromise the detergent action.

RESUMO

A mathematical model was developed to predict the content of undegradable neutral detergent insoluble protein (UNDIP) from chemical characteristics of tropical forages. This study was based on a biological limitation of a previous model, which restricts the UNDIP estimates to values equals or higher than 1.34 percent of dry matter. The databank was formed by 540 samples of tropical forages used in cattle feeding (fresh forage and hay). The ratio of UNDIP on neutral detergent insoluble protein (NDIP) was chosen as response variable and the acid detergent insoluble protein (ADIP) as independent variable. The mathematical model was found to be exponential, assuming the formula: UNDIP = NDIP x e-(0,818+0.16764DIP) , in which all values are expressed on dry matter basis. It was observed that biological limitation of the previous model was eliminated, even though a low statistical improvement was obtained. The prediction of a biological parameter (UNDIP) from a chemical characteristic (ADIP) still have some restrictions and the estimates should be applied with caution in some situations. The main application of the model described above is estimate UNDIP contents when biological methods are not available.

Daily gain and carcass traits of Nellore steers fed different levels of supplementation with high content of protein at finishing during the dry season and the availability of the components of the pasture were evaluated. The experiment was carried out on pasture of Brachiaria brizantha, cv. Marandu, in six paddocks of nine hectares. Forty-eight Nellore steers averaging 30-month old and 415+16kg were used. Each group was allocated in a paddock, being weighted in the beginning and every 21 days, during 84 days. The levels of supplements were: 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0kg/animal/day, in addition to a control (mineral mixture). The supplements, except the control, presented decreasing levels of crude protein (111 to 32 percent of the dry matter) and proportions of mineral mixture:urea:concentrate feeds of 25:25:50, 15:15:70, 10:10:80, 5:5:90, and 2.5:2.5:95, respectively. The statistical design was completely randomized and the treatments were evaluated by regression analysis. The proportion of stem and dead leaf increased in elapsing of the experimental periods characterizing water deficit in the dry season. There was increasing linear effect on the final live weight, average daily gain, carcass weight, fat thickness, and carcass yield as a function of supplement intake. The supplement conversion in kg/kg of weight gain, at 10:1, is typical of energetic supplementation, showing that the animals did not satisfactorily respond to protein supplementation, which would give better values of conversion.
